Moving from code to clinic: how Roche and GOSH are unlocking clinical data to inform personalised care
:quality(90)/)
Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) cares for children and young people facing some of the rarest, most complex medical conditions in the world. Delivering precision care to these patients requires answering complex clinical questions under tight time constraints.
Modern hospitals, such as GOSH, collect a wealth of clinical and health data when treating a patient. Historically, this data has remained siloed across incompatible reports, diagnostic repositories and administration registries. Accessing, interpreting and connecting those data points in real time has posed a persistent challenge for frontline NHS staff.
In 2021, Roche and GOSH embarked on a five-year collaborative partnership to bridge the gap between data science and day-to-day bedside care. By pairing GOSH’s world-renowned clinical expertise with Roche’s expertise in AI and data science, the partnership set out to move the system from retrospectively asking “what has happened?” to proactively predict “what would happen if…?”
The partnership created the Clinical Insights Unit, a multidisciplinary team dedicated to identifying systemic bottlenecks and inefficiencies and helping clinical teams to use data more effectively to support decision-making across the hospital. The partnership has delivered tangible benefits such as helping to free up hundreds of hospital beds per month, developing AI-powered tools that support smarter workflows and faster diagnoses saving months of clinical time and enabling more personalised care.
Our new animation, Moving from code to clinic, tells the story of how Roche and GOSH have worked together for the last five years to transform health data into practical solutions for patients, GOSH staff and the wider NHS ecosystem.

This activity is part of a Collaborative Working agreement between Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Roche Products Ltd. Every diagnostic model, algorithm, and software asset developed through the partnership was created specially for GOSH and remains the exclusive property of the hospital. For Roche, working alongside frontline clinicians provided real-world insights needed to develop more effective, patient-centred health technologies. A strict data sharing and governance agreement meant Roche never saw, accessed or held any identifiable patient data.
